A Snow Globe Day in Ludington Michigan

We had a snow globe day in Ludington. What is a snow globe day? Well, there is a moment after someone shakes up a snow globe where the flakes are still finding a new place to settle into the scene and flickers of glitter still float about the globe. That's a snow globe day.

For us, we visited Ludington as fresh powder from a recent snowfall was settling onto the trees. This created a whole new experience for us at Ludington State Park.

We started out with our fat bikes and the goal of riding out to Big Sable Point Lighthouse. It is a 1.8 mile trek both directions to the lighthouse and the conditions made it perfect for utilizing our fat bikes. The ride could not have been more stunning! The lighthouse feels much different in the winter and we had the entire place to ourselves to explore the area. Just a heads up, the lighthouse itself is not open during the winter months and we made sure to pack some snacks and water.

Next up we headed out to the Lost Lake Trail for a hike. We had our snowshoes with us but based on the trail and the amount of snow, we decided we didn't need them for this hike. That being said, we are believers that owning a pair of snowshoes can really extend your opportunities for winter adventures in a cost effective manner. With it being a fairly mild winter, Lost Lake and Hamlin Lake had almost no ice and it made for a nice backdrop for the hike with the fresh snow. The Lost Lake Trail is only one of many options for hiking at Ludington State Park.

One thing that we want to point out about Ludington State Park is that there is a group called Friends of Ludington State Park that does a lot of amazing things at the park. During the winter they host lantern lit hikes and snowshoeing. As winter comes to an end, guided hikes happen the third Sunday of each month where the hikes bring guests through different areas and trails in the park. You can learn more about Friends of Ludington State Park and see all of their events here.

The best part about Ludington State Park is that it is a park that is great in every season. One thing to know though is that much of the park will be closing to receive upgrades starting on September, 3 2024 and running through July 1, 2025. The stretch of shoreline, beach and trails leading up to the park entrance booth will remain open during the project.
