The Highbanks Trail: A Hiking Gem in Michigan

Located in Michigan’s Huron National Forest, the High Banks Trail follows one of the state’s most beautiful waterways, the Au Sable River. This seven-mile (one-way) hiking route offers elevated views of the river’s sweeping bends, old-growth pines, and sandy dunes shaped by glaciers long ago.

Whether you’re chasing fall colors, a spring adventure, or a quiet winter snowshoe trek, the Highbanks Trail delivers a classic Michigan hiking experience.

Hiking Tips for the Highbanks Trail

  • This isn’t a loop trail so if you want to do the entire 7 miles a vehicle staged at both ends would be needed or it would be a 14 mile out and back trail.
  • Bring water and snacks, as services are limited along the route.
  • Wear layers. We always recommend this while hiking but the river breezes can make temperatures fluctuate quickly.

Why Hikers Love the Au Sable River Views

The Highbanks Trail gets its name from the tall bluffs that tower over the Au Sable River. These “high banks” give you a rare aerial perspective of one of Michigan’s most iconic rivers. This hike can be enjoyed in every season. We were there in September and now want to see it in every season!

Whether you’re a seasoned backpacker or a casual nature lover, this trail combines natural beauty, history, and solitude in one unforgettable hike.
